At least once a week, I struggle with Elias in order to clip his fingernails (and, less frequently, his toenails). This has got to be one of my least favorite baby chores. I've accidentally nipped him twice. So a month or so ago, I decided to temporarily lift our usual ban on television, thinking a little daytime entertainment might distract him long enough for me to trim all ten fingernails. That worked for a few weeks, alternating between cartoons, Ellen, and, the one time I tried this in the afternoon, Judge Judy. I can't decide if he prefers to watch animated, puppet, or real people. My preference, for what it's worth (and it's not worth much), is Ellen.
Anyway, none of the above seemed to be working this morning, so Neal had the brilliant idea to turn on the video catnip, the DVD for which was already in the DVD player. And voila - ten trimmed nails! It wasn't entertaining enough for me to get his toenails, too, but as always, I'll take what I can get.
Yet another way babies are a little like cats...

The only afternoon show I will try to make it home for is Ellen. Normal days I'm off by 4pm, and can catch at least a little before making dinner. Everyone else (Oprah & Phil in particular) has gotten weird, in my opinion. This just goes to show that Elias will be an outdoor child if he's watching that DVD - isn't it a lot of outdoor stuff?
Funny, Ellen is on first thing in the morning here. The video catnip is indeed all outdoorsy stuff - birds and squirrels frolicking, eating, etc. He likes to watch the birds outside on our front porch so I'm not surprised. He does seem to like being outside in general. Maybe because we've been cooped up all of this long, cold winter! Can you tell I'm ready for warmer weather??
Ellen is totally our (my) fingernail clipping program of choice. My day looks up when I realize Henry's nails need clipping, and we can therefore watch a little Ellen.
You know, Chrissa, now that you mention it, I think I got the idea to switch from cartoons to Ellen because you mentioned that's what you enjoy watching during baby manicure mornings. I'm always kind of sad when we're done, actually, but the one time I continued to watch while Elias crawled around, he went straight for the fireplace area (decorative as it is, it still isn't exactly babyproof) in the couple of seconds I didn't have my full attention on him. But it did dawn on me that staying at home most days, I can theoretically watch a lot of shows I don't usually.
